My brother, the handsome Marine - March 23, 2012
Posted: March 24, 2012 | Last Revised: March 24, 2012
I am Cliff's youngest sister, and with 11 years age difference between us I always looked up to him as my hero. He cut a particularly dashing figure in his dress whites uniform--at least as I remember it so many years ago.
While he was in the Marine Corps, he brought all of us as family members to a Dependents' Day cruise on the USS Hancock. I was about 11, so it must have been around 1959-60. The day was spectacular as we sailed outside of San Francisco, and we learned how airplanes take off and land on an aircraft carrier. Most of the demonstration flights went smoothly; however, one pilot mis-gauged something, or a piece of equipment malfunctioned, and the plane had to ditch into the ocean--in front of all us civilians. The pilot was fine, but as Cliff said, 'it was a bit of an embarrassment to the big brass.'
I also remember Cliff teaching us to play Casino and Tripoly. I've longed over the years to play card and board games with someone who laughs as well as Cliff. I guess we'll just have to teach the next generation of Andersons to bring laughter generously into everything they do.
